If you only travel on occasion, you may never have taken advantage of hotel concierge services. Perhaps you do not know they exist, or maybe you have seen them as you pass through the hotel lobby, but you just can’t figure out their purpose.

If you are a traveler and you are new in town, you should get to know your hotel concierge service desk and its personnel. Nearly all city hotels have a concierge desk. Motels and hotels in smaller towns probably will not have these services. Concierge services are critical to the success of a domestic or international city hotel. These corporate concierge services and personal concierge services keep hotel clientele coming back and that loyalty is important to any hotel.  

Repeat business is important, so hotels put a lot of thought into their concierge services and carefully hire staff for the concierge function. The more phone numbers and contacts in the concierge Rolodex, the better chance they will get the job. It is the city and area connections and the personal influence that is important. Often, the only way you can get a reservation at a hot restaurant on a Friday night is through the influence of the concierge at your hotel.   

Tipping is allowed but most services are free. If you are interested in a concierge service, be sure you ask whether there is a charge. You don’t want to be surprised with a lot of extra charges on your hotel bill. Standard services like directions and restaurant reservations are always free. Personal shopping, and personal services usually come at a price. The personal services offered by a concierge at a hotel can include arranging for pet care, massages, hair stylists, flowers, cruises, guided tours, theater tickets, and special meals, tours of the city, and even camera and cell phone rentals.  

Remember, it doesn’t cost anything to ask. So, if you want a service, ask for it and ask about the charge. You will find the people who staff the concierge desk to be pleasant and professional. They are paid to know the answers and to have the best connections in the city, so don’t hesitate to use the concierge services when you stay in a hotel.
